Raised bed refurbishment
After many years, the timber on these raised beds needed refreshing. So, the old and rotting timber was pulled up, plants carefully dug up and set aside for later use, shovelling of earth to level some of the beds and to create space to work - the earthworms were some of the biggest we'd ever seen!
Modifications were made to the foundations, the beautiful, reclaimed railway sleepers cut to size - which is a lot easier said than done - and secured in place.
Finally, the raised beds were backfilled with earth, and everyone returned home - plants, earthworms and bumblebees. Everything was right again in this incredible ecosystem!
Wisteria pruning
Thinning out the climber of dead wood improved air circulation to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. This also revealed which vines were full of life and allowed the training of shoots to areas now sparse from the removal of dead wood. Although inactive, we even worked around a bird nest, leaving it undisturbed.
General maintenance
Whilst these might appear similar, each is quite different. Favourites include: having the pleasure of being in the company of woodpeckers, sparrows, blackbirds and robins whilst working on the edge of Epping Forest; being given agency with hedge trimming resulting in setting down the hedge cutter and happily setting to work with secateurs instead.
